Every year, as the calendar starts to wind down and that familiar pause settles in, I find myself asking the same questions:
Who do I want to be in the year ahead?
What deserves more intention and grace?
What is ready to grow, and what needs to be released?
Before the goals. Before the lists. Before the plans. I always begin with a word.
It becomes the thread that ties everything together.
My goals, my habits, my mindset. It is the quiet anchor I return to when I feel distracted or overwhelmed, the steady reminder that grounds me when the year inevitably gets loud.
It might sound small, but it’s become one of the most meaningful rituals I have.
Over the years, I’ve chosen words like Evolve, Elevate, Expand, and Grace. And when I look back, I can see exactly how each one shaped the season I was in. They weren’t just aspirational. They became lenses. I filtered decisions through them. I returned to them when things felt hard.
And every time, I came out the other side with more clarity, confidence, and growth than I expected.
This year feels different.
There’s a lot on my heart. A lot changing. A quiet readiness to take life to the next level; not in a rushed way, but in a rooted one. So, I started sitting with my word a little earlier than usual, letting it surface instead of forcing it.
And the word that kept coming back was clear.
Flourish.
Not hustle. Not grind. Not prove.
Flourish.
To grow or develop in a healthy, vigorous way.
To thrive because the environment finally supports you.
To expand naturally, steadily, and fully into who you already are becoming.
That’s what I want this year to be about.
Flourishing in my work, yes, but also in my body, my relationships, my creativity, my faith, my belief in myself. Flourishing not because I’m doing more, but because I’m creating the conditions that allow me to grow.
There’s something deeply comforting about that definition. It doesn’t demand urgency. It invites alignment. It reminds me that growth doesn’t have to be forceful to be powerful.
Once I choose my word, it becomes my bestie for the year.
I keep it close in little, intentional ways. I write it in my notebook, save it in my phone, set it as a reminder on my lock screen, and stick Post-its on my monitors at home and in the office. I also love treating myself to a bracelet with my word on it. The Little Words Project has always been a favorite, but I’ve also found beautiful pieces from brands like Mantra Band and small, independent boutiques on Etsy. There’s something special about wearing your word, letting it move with you through the day.
It’s a quiet promise to myself. One I carry with me, day after day.
If you’ve never chosen a word for the year, consider this your invitation.
No overthinking required. No five-year plan or color-coded vision board. Just one word that reflects where you’ve been, feels like possibility, and pulls you forward toward where you’re ready to go next.
Let it guide you back to yourself, steady you when life feels full, and gently remind you of what matters most.
This year, I’m choosing to flourish.
