I am a firm believer that there is a perfect black dress for almost every occasion — but let’s be honest, one little black dress doesn’t fit all moods, events, or body types. What works for a beachside dinner doesn’t necessarily translate to a boardroom or baby shower.

It’s fair to say that black has always been my color. I can probably thank Express in the late ‘90s for fueling my obsession with black and white outfits. (If you know, you know — the graphic tees, the stretchy flares, the mall trips. A core memory.)

Anyway, I’ve bought a few black dresses this year from none other than Amazon (convenient, affordable, surprisingly chic), and every single one has been a hit. Here are five that I can confidently say are closet staples — dresses I’ve tested in real life and would recommend to literally anyone looking for flattering, versatile, confidence-boosting pieces.

1. The Sheath Dress: Sophisticated, Stretchy, and Work-Trip-Approved

I originally bought this for a work conference in California, and it checked all the boxes. Lightweight but not flimsy, it holds its shape and has the right amount of stretch — just enough to flatter your curves without making you feel squeezed in. I paired it with wedges and didn’t feel like it was too short (I’m tall, so that’s always a concern). The only miss? Faux pockets. But it’s so good, I forgive it.

2. The Black & White Ribbed Dress: From Boardroom to Baby Shower

This one is a go-to when I need to feel polished but not overdone. It’s been my pick for conferences, big meetings, and even a baby shower — it always works. I’m usually not a fan of ribbed sweater dresses (they can stretch out in weird ways), but this one has a tighter rib that keeps its structure and hugs in all the right places. No sad-sagging happening by the end of the day.

3. The Wrap Skort Dress: Playful Meets Practical

This dress is just plain fun. It’s what I throw on when I want to feel cute while running errands or hanging outside. The wrap skort style gives it an athletic vibe with a flirty twist. Oh, and it has a pocket! Just don’t be like me and put it on backwards the first time — the pocket is in the back.

4. The Long Black Dress: Comfy, Chic, and Surprisingly Flattering

I didn’t think I’d love this one as much as I do, but it’s now a warm-weather hero. It’s the kind of dress you can throw on with flip flops for a beach day or dress up with heels for dinner. The fabric is on the lighter side (read: it can be a tad sheer), but I’m okay with that in the summer when humidity is high and patience is low. Bonus: you can wear a regular bra with it — no dreaded strapless nonsense.

5. The Athletic Dress: The MVP of My Closet

This is my favorite dress of the summer, full stop. It’s part tennis dress, part going-out dress, part city-exploring-all-day dress. I wear it everywhere. I now own it in multiple colors — and I’m still reaching for the black one every time. Pro tip: I sized down and I’m glad I did. It’s fitted (hello, snatched), but still comfortable and secure. I’m mid-chested and can go braless in the smaller size, which gives me just enough support and shape.
